WHAT ABOUT BONDED TITLES?
Selling a car or truck with a bonded title is not a problem. Clear bonded titles work just like any other clear title when you want to register or sell a vehicle. However, if you have a vehicle you would like to register or sell but never had the title or are unable to otherwise acquire or replace the title, getting a bonded title IS an option. However, the process takes time, has several steps and has certain conditions you MUST meet in order to obtain one.
First, you must be a Texas resident or military stationed in Texas.
Second, the vehicle must have been previously titled in Texas (or you will need to undergo an auto theft investigation completed by local law enforcement who will then supply you with the official completed form.)
Third, the vehicle must be in your possession and CANNOT be JUNKED, NONREPAIRABLE, ABANDONED, STOLEN or missing any necessary components (frame, body, motor.)
While all of these conditions establish a minimum requirement, it's important to note that bonded titles can be expensive. They are meant to cover the cost of paying the last owner listed on the missing title for the standard presumptive value of the vehicle. This means that if the vehicle isn't currently running and is unlikely to ever run again without a major investment, it probably won't be worth the expense of getting a bonded title.
If someone gifts you their running vehicle but the title is lost, this situation may be one where it is worth your money, time and effort to acquire a bonded title so you can register, drive and legally own the vehicle. You must purchase a surety bond at 1 1/2 times the value of the vehicle should the owner return and assert ownership.
