WHAT IF I USED TO HAVE THE TITLE BUT I LOST IT OR JUST CAN'T FIND IT?

If you can't find the paperwork AND the title is in the previous owner's name, you are out of luck.
Read: DO I REALLY NEED A TITLE TO SELL A JUNK CAR IN TEXAS ? at the bottom of the TITLE FAQs page
If however, the title is in YOUR name (or someone you are still in contact with) you're in luck!
Can you wait a month or so? If yes, go online, pay $2 and request one from the DMV. If its in the name of a friend or family member, they will have to complete this request.
If you need one NOW, go in person to a regional DMV office with the VIN and your driver's license and pay less than $6 and get a new one. If the title is in the name of a friend or family member, you will need a copy of their driver's license and a Power of Attorney to sell a vehicle available from the DMV website. Get one at https://www.txdmv.gov/sites/default/files/form_files/VTR-271.pdf
If the family member passed away, there was no will and you are the legal heir to the vehicle, you will need the Affadavit of Heirship among other documents. Check out:

For Travis and Bastrop counties, the regional office is on 1001 E. PARMER Lane in North Austin. This is located off the east bound service road just south of Parmer, a few blocks east of IH35.
Either way, check out the link below for specifics.http://www.dmv.org/tx-texas/replacing-a-lost-title.php
There are junk buyers out there that operate outside the law. NO legitimate salvage company will buy a junk vehicle without a title. Some buyers may purchase your vehicle for parts and scrap or recycle the metal. Others may get it running again and resell it without a title or have a "buddy" at the DMV that can get a doctored title for it. Others may take it to Mexico and pay off the cartels to bring it over the border.
There are legal ways to get rid of it. Check out the Bonded Title page and Abandoned Vehicle FAQ pages.
